We built a custom address layer that combines the precision of the New Google Places API with the administrative control of Directus CMS.
In countries like Peru and Chile, Shopify’s native address autocomplete is either non-existent or dangerously inaccurate. Zip codes and provinces are often mismatched, and standard Google Maps pins frequently fail to account for local naming conventions.
When a customer cannot find their address in a dropdown, they do one of two things: they enter a "best guess" (leading to a failed delivery) or they abandon the cart. For Samsonite, this meant high operational costs for redelivery and lost revenue at the very last step of the journey.
We built a custom address layer that combines the precision of the New Google Places API with the administrative control of Directus CMS.
We used Shopify Checkout UI Extensions to inject custom, high-intelligence address fields. Instead of relying on Shopify’s limited regional datasets, our extension queries the Google Places API directly, tailored specifically for the nuances of LATAM geography.
